Gossamer by Karina: Market Day

Selling my fruit bowls at Carriageworks market was a great experience for me because although the thought of talking and trying to convince market goers to buy my bowl freaked me out, I was able to learn many things and towards the end reevaluate my overall design ethic and selling technique.

From what I gathered from market day, the most important observation I found was that the mass market generally preferred consistency and had  a "less is more" attitude towards design and materiality. Even after everything's finished, realising what appealed to the mass market during that day will always be important.  If ever I get the chance to sell my fruit bowls again, I would be able to recreate or improve the way I design and create according to what customers really want to see and buy. Although what I presented to the market weren't exactly simple or consistent, I was still able to sell 8 out of 10 bowls which I thought was pretty good considering the variety of fruit bowls the customers got to choose from. Other than observing what the mass market wanted for future reference, I really did enjoy the experience of selling our individual products that we as a class worked extremely hard on to complete!

Gossamer by Karina: Point of Sale

For the point of sale poster, I wanted to focus particularly on the fruit bowl in its general use and the bowl’s main qualities. I had a hard time rearranging the information and even the name of the bowl in an eye-catching manner without looking tacky. I tried to use bright colours and different fonts to emphasize on eye catching, however I believe the poster still turned out looking bland.

The flyers were originally supposed to be postcards people could take and keep, however I misinterpreted the size of the paper and I also wanted to put more information that couldn't fit in a small postcard so instead, I created A5 flyers. By creating back to front flyers, I was able to create a hopefully aesthetically pleasing front side - this way people would most likely keep the flyer for the illustration and was able to keep all the necessary information at the back.

My business card design was one of my old water colour paintings which I scanned and edited on Photoshop. I covered parts of the original painting with triangles done on Illustrator to balance the 2 mediums. I was skeptic of how well the painting would print on canvas photo paper but luckily it turned out better than I had expected. I thought the painting would turn out dull but the texture and shine of the paper made the colours pop.

Gossamer by Karina: Price Tags

left: final tag /
right: experiment with canvas photo paper

Initially I wanted to use canvas photo paper again for the tags, however after printing out a test and gluing the paper together, they started to bend in the middle. In the end I chose “netting paper” bought at a printing store. I was happy with this decision because the paper when stuck together made the tags more durable, and the texture of the paper made the ink sink in lighter than with photo paper, adding a softer touch to the price tags. I used twine to tie the tags onto the bowls because they had an organic look to them, they also matched with the box handles. Attached to the twine were leftover cut outs from my first laser cut bowl - I decided to add these pieces as little “gifts.”

Gossamer by Karina: Graphics on the box

Because the shape of my box doesn't allow for a banner, I found this an opportunity to use the box’s form to my advantage. I originally was only going to put one triangle of information only (the story) however, I needed a way to display my bowl apart from the window on the lid so I added an additional triangle with an image 2 weeks before the due date. I printed the triangles on canvas photo paper I bought at Officeworks for a glossy, bumpy texture that would contrast with the cardboard’s colour.

The problems that occurred during this process were mostly due to the printing:

  • Using new paper required a couple of tests and adjustments of the printer in order for the ink to sink in properly
  • My printer tends to over-ink making what I had created on illustrator darker than what was displayed on screen
For the lid of the boxes I wanted to put something that would clearly show the logo and the fruit bowl’s name. Initially I wanted to spray paint this onto the box, however because of time constraints, I had to find a process that would display this design idea quicker. I chose to experiment with printing on clear sticker paper and after researching into the availability of this material, I found a printer store that could only print A3 sizes if the paper was clear and glossy.  Visually I wasn't too happy with the overall coverage of the box, had the lid sticker been white, maybe the outer graphics would have related more to each other but it would have also completely cover the uniqueness of the box’s structure.

Pareena~INGENIUM~Market Day

Finally the day has come after working on this project for more than a month!!!

I was very nervous about the Market Day. I had no confidence with my bowls at all, What happen if I have not sell any??. Therefore, on Saturday night, I told my dad that he definitely has to come and buy at least one bowl. He did come on Market Day and brought one. However, I was very happy with the end result as I sold 9 bowls where 7 were from customers that I never know them and they have not see my design before. All those nerves that I imagined were started to disappeared as I started to present my bowl to customers. This is not only that all the customers were nice but also as I have talked to one customer, I have practiced and increased in my confidence more. The hard work for the last 2 weeks before the Market Day has paid off J

Gossamer by Karina: Final Box Iteration

left: final iteration / right: 2nd 1:1 iteration

For the final iteration I focused on minimizing the 2nd 1:1 iteration to save on cardboard material and also so the bowl could fit properly inside. This process took a lot of time because unlike the other experiments, this one needed measurements to be trimmed rather than scaled. What I learnt from the previous iterations was that the template had to remain in square form making each edge equal to the one opposite. In order to retain this cubic form, I placed the original template on rhino, and experimented with trimming the edges. I managed to create a lid coverage of 320 x 320 mm, although this was smaller than the longest length of the bowl (335mm) I found that the rotated square base (not parallel to the lid) and it’s connecting triangular faces created more space. As a result, once tested and built with plain paper, the bowl was able to fit perfectly. With a couple of minor measurement changes along the way, I used this final template to create the 10 boxes.

Pareena-INGENIUM~Fabric & 'Natural Flow'

‘Natural flow’ idea is expressed through the use of fabric. The satin fabric brings customers ’attentions. This is because of its shinny quality and its gold colour that strongly contrast to the white cardboard. The satin fabric is effected by light as well as gravity, where as this concept is strongly link to nature. Fabric is used throughout this project, i.e. banner, cushion, and on displayed table.
Flow of fabric = flow of nature

Pareena~INGENIUM~ multiple productions

By produced 10 fruit bowls and 10 boxes, allowing students to experience in multiple productions. I have learned tips to improve on the products from this multiple production, i.e. wash the bowl straight after sanding is really helped so you don't have to clean the bowl as much. In multiple productions, allowing costs to be reduced. For instance buy purchase 1 meter of fabric can be used for 5 packaging whereas if doing one packaging, you have to buy 1 meter of fabric anyway!!

Gossamer by Karina: Box Iterations (mock up models)

After seeing other students use books from the library to gather inspiration, I decided to borrow three - Structural Package Designs and Special Packaging by Joost Baardman, and Packaging Templates edited by Ju Hai. To choose the final box design, I created a process of elimination where I chose 10 from each, 7 from each, 5 from each then 3 all together. For the final three designs I decided to print out the templates given to A3 size and make them to gain a three dimensional perspective.

Out of the three, I found the last design the most structurally interesting however used the most cardboard.  I decided to resolve the problem through experimentation: by slicing the mock up model in half I would be using material economically and maybe come up with a completely unique design. Slicing the template required shifting and deleting line work from the original given template on illustrator. The experimentation turned out to be successful with the original structure still intact, however by cutting the template in half, the position of the base had changed which required shifting the line work of base supports such as inner and outer flaps.

Pareena~INGENIUM~packaging

The final packaging idea became so simple because the fruit bowl design pattern itself has the complex pattern. The rectangular box is juxtaposed to the pattern of the fruit bowl These create the excitements for the customers as they open the box.
ADVANTAGES:
-Symmetrical, eye catching and contrast to the shape of the bowl itself
-Low cost, used less cardboard

Pareena~INGENIUM~tag

300 gsm gloss paper
The shape of the bowl becomes the shape of the tags and tickets. This is because the shape of the bowl is curved which is expressed as the idea of ‘natural flow’. The neutral and pastel colours are making customers to read the tag (care instructions) easier than other colours; as these tones of colours are expressed the sense of calmness. The background of the tags and the tickets are the image of coral as this indicates the inspiration to the designing of the bowl. The brown string that attaches the tag to the bowl is blended in with the brown colour of the logo ‘INGENIUM’. Brown colour is also strongly link to nature.

Pareena~INGENIUM~logo

INGENIUM’ means nature in Latin. For my logo, I wanted to capture the sense of ‘natural flow’. For this reason, by using embroidery on my logo is very useful technique to capture this. This technique is also creating unique and difference to my packaging design. After I have done the sketch, I gave it to digital embroidery company in Thailand, therefore the price for this was a lot cheaper if it is done in Australia- approximately $1.10 for each logo.  The brown thread expresses the organic form. The white background is juxtaposed to the brown thread which it is making easier for the customers to see the logo because logo is one of the important elements in marketing the brand. The logo itself forms by the shape of coral and that is where my inspirations came from.

Yuruo Zhang _ Market Day

On market day, we together set up a stall in Eveleigh Market in Darlington. The Eveleigh Artisans’ Market is providing a platform for emerging and contemporary indie designers, artists and makers to showcase & sell their wares directly to the public. We displayed our package, fruit bowl and some buiness cards and flyer to promote our fruit bowl. At last, I only sell 3 package of fruit bowl in 5 hours even though almost every one sais my package looks nice. I analysis this problem, almost every person who spend money buying our design is focus on our fruit bowl, but in this subject I spent all my effort into the package design instead of the fruitbowl, I did not design well of my fruit, I am willing to re-design it and make it better.
