Meristem Bowl Design

Edward decided to source the basic shapes from various photos in order to fully express the design influence of the way branches stem in different shapes and sizes. He did this on Adobe Illustrator, making the branch shapes very authentic and realistic. This allowed him to develop different shapes and arrange them in the way he wanted his bowl to look, with a whole range of different branch thicknesses and patterns, yet still manufacturable and with the strength needed to be bent into the desired shape.

One of the initial net designs.

This lead him to the next part of refining the net design; making it suitable to be laser cut and bent. A lot of this was done sitting at the computer deleting, adding, and editing different lines. Due to the complexity of this design that way developing, he decided to opt for a 4.5mm thick acrylic sheet, 3mm being too small and allowing breakage, and 6mm being too big and would not allow it to be curved to his intentions.
